The 2024 NFL Draft saw a historic number of quarterbacks selected in the first round, but none have a story quite like J.J. McCarthy. After tearing his meniscus in the preseason and missing his entire rookie year, the Minnesota Vikings’ tenth overall pick is set to make his long-awaited NFL debut. McCarthy’s journey from sidelined rookie to starting quarterback makes his 2025 season one of the most intriguing storylines in the league.

He is, in a way, the rawest second-year starter in modern NFL history. He’s had limited opportunities against NFL competition, with only 27 preseason dropbacks under his belt. Yet, the Vikings have fully committed to him, a decision that speaks volumes about their belief in his talent and development.

High Expectations and a Loaded Offense

Despite his lack of on-field experience, the expectations for McCarthy are sky-high. He inherits a talented Vikings roster, a team that won 14 games with a backup quarterback last year. As ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky points out, McCarthy has a track record of winning and is surrounded by an elite cast of playmakers. He’ll be throwing to Justin Jefferson, a superstar wide receiver with a 99 overall rating in Madden 26, and a strong supporting cast including Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and a beefed-up offensive line. The backfield also features a formidable duo in Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason. The team is set up for success, and many believe McCarthy can be the final piece of the puzzle.

In training camp, reports have been mixed but mostly positive. He has had both “up-and-down” days and moments where he looked like a “star,” particularly during a joint practice with the Patriots where he reportedly completed 17 of 20 passes for six touchdowns. According to head coach Kevin O’Connell, J.J McCarthy has shown an “incredible amount of conviction” in his decision-making.

The Challenge Ahead

McCarthy’s transition to the NFL will not be without its challenges. Historically, many rookie quarterbacks struggle in their first career starts. The Vikings face a tough Week 1 matchup against a formidable Chicago Bears defense. This will be his first true test in a hostile environment, and a poor performance could send fans into a frenzy.

Furthermore, McCarthy’s draft profile and college stats have led some to predict a “bust” and a potential “epic collapse” for the Vikings. He is the first first-round quarterback since 1967 to miss his entire rookie season due to injury, and the first top-10 pick since Joey Harrington in 2002 to be drafted without a 3,000-yard passing or 500-yard rushing college season.

Despite the skepticism, many believe that McCarthy’s talent, coupled with the Vikings’ system, will lead to a successful season. Predictions for his performance vary, with one source projecting he could throw for 3,600 yards and rush for 400, a feat accomplished last year by only star dual-threat quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Another model, based on historical data, predicts McCarthy’s maximum passer rating over the next two seasons could be 102.9, which would have ranked sixth in the NFL in 2024.

Whether he hits those lofty predictions or not, this is McCarthy’s show now. He’s a proven winner from his time at Michigan, and his unflappable demeanor and knack for making plays outside of structure should translate well to the pros. If he can take care of the football and let the talent around him shine, the Vikings could be a serious contender.
